Stephen Henning is a Minnesota-based contemporary landscape painter whose work is rooted in a lifelong connection to wild places. His paintings combine Impressionist sensitivity to light and atmosphere with chromatic color, expressive brushwork, and layered surfaces to create landscapes that convey both a strong sense of place and the experience of being within it.

Forests, lakes, reflections, meadows, and changing light recur throughout Henning’s work. Rather than documenting a landscape literally, he interprets what it feels like to encounter a place—the movement of light through trees, shifting colors reflected on water, seasonal transitions, and the quiet complexity revealed through sustained observation.

Henning is particularly known for immersive, large-scale studio paintings, developed slowly through layers of structure and color. Smaller studio works and plein-air paintings are also an important part of his practice. His work has been exhibited regionally and nationally and is held in private collections throughout the United States.

Henning studied art at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota. His professional affiliations include the American Impressionist Society, Outdoor Painters of Minnesota, and Signature Membership in the Oil Pastel Society. He currently serves as President of the Alexandria Art Guild and Chair of Prairie Lakes Plein Air.

After establishing his professional painting career in the 1990s, Henning began to distribute his artwork nationally. Following a twelve-year hiatus from painting after a hand injury, he returned to the easel in 2022 and today works from his country studio near Evansville, Minnesota.
